Personal training at Dean Clough, Halifax
Get strong without the gym nerves
One-to-one coaching for beginners, for people who want to lift properly, and for anyone working back from a sore shoulder. Your first session is free, with no pressure to sign up.
New to the gym?
Nervous is normal. Here is what I tell everyone.
Most people who get in touch with me have never trained, or have not trained for years. These are the worries I hear most often.
- “I've never lifted a weight in my life.”
- That is fine. We start with the basics, how to squat, hinge, push and pull, and only add weight when you are ready for it.
- “I'm worried people will watch me.”
- We train at RG Strength and Physique, an independent gym at Dean Clough rather than a busy chain, and I am with you for the whole session.
- “I don't know how to use the equipment.”
- You do not need to. I will show you every exercise, set it up with you and write it down so you can repeat it.
- “I'm not fit enough to start.”
- Nobody is on day one. Your programme starts from where you are now, not from where someone else is.
- “I've got a bad shoulder.”
- Tell me about it at your free session. We will train around it, and work on it, with exercises that suit how it is today.
- “I'll get talked into something.”
- Your first session is free and there is no obligation. If it is not for you, that is the end of it.

Questions people ask
Where do we train?
At RG Strength and Physique, inside Dean Clough in Halifax (HX3). My details are on the contact page, and I will send directions when you book.
Is the first session really free?
Yes. It is a chance for us to meet, talk about your goals and try a few exercises. There is nothing to pay and nothing to sign.
What should I wear and bring?
Comfortable clothes you can move in, trainers, a bottle of water and a towel. That is all.
How often will I need to train?
Most beginners do well on two or three sessions a week. One session with me plus a programme to follow on your own works well too. We will find what fits your week.
Can you help if I have an injury?
Often, yes, and shoulders especially. I will ask about it at your first session. If something needs a diagnosis I will ask you to see your GP or a physio first, and I am happy to work alongside them. More on the shoulder rehab page.
How do I pay?
You can buy a package online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay on the packages page, or talk to me about it at your free session.

Tailored programme or a workout app: what is the difference?
Workout apps are cheap and easy, so why pay for a programme written for you? What a tailored plan does that a generic one cannot.

A shoulder that aches when you press or reach overhead is common. Here is what to check first, when to see someone, and how training can help.

How often should a beginner lift weights?
Two or three times a week is plenty for most beginners. Here is why, how to fit it around a busy week and what to do on the other days.
