Strength training
Learn to lift properly and get stronger, whether you are new to barbells or you have stalled training on your own.
Why get stronger?
Strength makes everything else easier. Carrying the shopping, picking up the kids, getting up off the floor, playing sport at the weekend. Stronger muscles also help support your joints and your back, and lifting regularly is good for your bones as you get older.
It is also one of the most satisfying ways to train. You can see your progress written down in black and white: the weight on the bar goes up, week by week.
Good technique comes first. We start light, get the movement right and then add weight steadily, so you get stronger without getting hurt.
The lifts
What we build on
-
Squat
Strong legs and hips, starting with a bodyweight or goblet squat and working towards the barbell.
-
Deadlift
Picking things up off the floor safely: the hinge that protects your back in everyday life.
-
Press
Bench and overhead pressing for a strong chest, shoulders and arms.
-
Pull
Rows and pull-ups (assisted to begin with) for a strong upper back and healthy shoulders.
How the progress happens
-
Find your starting point
We see what you can do comfortably today, with good form.
-
Practise the technique
Plenty of quality reps at a weight you control.
-
Add weight steadily
Small jumps, often. That is how strength is built.
-
Review and adjust
Every few weeks we look at the numbers and change the plan if it needs it.
