Shoulder rehab

Strength training to rebuild a shoulder that has been sore, stiff or injured, at a pace it can handle.

Getting your shoulder back

A sore shoulder can stop you doing all sorts of things: lifting overhead, sleeping on that side, pressing in the gym, even reaching for the top shelf. Lots of people rest it, wait, and find it is still not right months later.

I help people rebuild their shoulders with careful strength work. We find out what the shoulder can do today, strengthen the small muscles that hold it in place and the upper back that supports it, improve its range of movement, and then build back up to the lifts and activities you want to get back to.

It suits people whose physio treatment has finished but who are not back to full strength, people with a shoulder that niggles when they train, and people who have been told to strengthen it but do not know where to start.

I am a personal trainer, not a physiotherapist or a doctor. If your shoulder is newly injured, very painful, numb or tingling, or you have had surgery, please see your GP or a physio first. I am happy to work alongside the advice they give you.

How we work

Step by step, at its pace

  1. Tell me what happened

How it started, what makes it worse and what any physio or GP has told you.

  2. See what it can do

Gentle checks of movement and strength, so we start in the right place.

  3. Build it back

Controlled exercises for the rotator cuff and upper back, adding load slowly.

  4. Back to lifting

Bring pressing, pulling and overhead work back in, one step at a time.

Shoulder questions

Should I rest it or train it?

Complete rest rarely gets a shoulder back to full strength on its own. Once anything serious has been ruled out, the right kind of movement and gradual strengthening usually helps more. If you are not sure whether it has been ruled out, see your GP or a physio first.

Can I still train the rest of my body?

Yes. While we work on the shoulder, we keep your legs, back and core training going with exercises that do not aggravate it.

How long will it take?

It depends on the shoulder and how long it has been a problem. We review it every few weeks so you can see how it is coming on. Read more in my post about sore shoulders.
