Beginners & gym anxiety
One-to-one training for people who feel nervous in a gym, or have never set foot in one.
You do not need to be fit to start
Walking into a gym for the first time is a big step. The noise, the machines and the feeling that everyone knows what they are doing except you can be enough to put anyone off.
With me you are never left to work it out on your own. Every session is one-to-one, in an independent gym at Dean Clough, and we go at your pace. I show you each exercise, explain why we are doing it and check you are comfortable before we move on.
There are no silly questions. If you want to know what a machine is for, why your legs ache two days later or what to eat before training, ask.
What we work on
From first visit to feeling at home
-
Finding your feet
Where everything is, how to set up the equipment safely and how to warm up properly.
-
The basic movements
Squat, hinge, push, pull and carry, learned with light weights first and done well.
-
Confidence on your own
A simple plan to follow between sessions, so the gym starts to feel like yours.
-
Progress you can see
We write down what you lift each week, so you can watch the numbers go up.
The worries I hear most
- “Everyone will know I'm new.”
- Everyone was new once. In a one-to-one session, the only person paying attention to you is me.
- “I'll be sore for a week.”
- A little stiffness is normal at first. We build up gradually so you can still walk down the stairs the next day.
- “I don't have the right kit.”
- Comfortable clothes and trainers are all you need. No special shoes, belts or gadgets.
- “I tried before and gave up.”
- Most people do, usually because the plan did not fit their life. We start with what you can keep up.
